Wales in Washington 2009
Moving images from Wales to premier in the USA
Six award winning films from Wales will premier in the United States later this month, having been invited to take part in the Wales Smithsonian Cymru Festival in Washington DC.
Organized by Sarah Howells in association with the Film Agency for Wales and the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, the films will be screened at the Goethe Institut. Films include Gideon Koppel’s latest feature documentary, Sleep Furiously which is funded by the Film Agency for Wales along with Dal: Yma Nawr by director Marc Evans. BAFTA Award winning producer Ynyr Williams, and a Board member of the Film Agency for Wales, will host a Q&A session following the screening of Dal: Yma Nawr, a film that takes the audience on a 2000 year odyssey through Europe’s oldest surviving bardic tradition.
The 50’s drama documentary David by Cardiff director Paul Dickson will also be shown along with the Oscar winning Dylan Thomas starring Richard Burton. Director Wyndham Price will present Abrahams’ Point with director Justin Kerrigan introducing I Know you Know (both funded by the Film Agency for Wales) for their American premiers.
Dan Thomas, Head of Exhibition and Education for the Film Agency for Wales said: “This exciting line-up of Welsh films will be a real treat for audience, who should appreciate the visual feast of moving image with a great opportunity to meet and hear from Welsh filmmakers and special guests.”
“Of course, the festival also offers a significant opportunity from which to raise the profile and awareness of Welsh filmmaking talent with a largely US audience with over 100 individual practitioners, performers and presenters from Wales participating in the festival.”
The Film Agency for Wales is funded by the Arts Council of Wales, the UK Film Council and the Welsh Assembly Government, via Creative Business Wales, the latter of which was set up to support, encourage and increase the range and number of films being produced in Wales and to foster the abundance of creative talent in Wales.
