Welsh Coalfields Bonds Awards
Media Release
9th January 2007
The Welsh Coalfields Bond Awards are provided by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Citylife Ltd and aim to support people from the former Welsh coalfields.
The scheme provides financial support to access a career in the cultural and creative industries.
Awards can be used for, for example:
- To help those wanting to pursue a career in the creative sector via funding of, for example, musical instruments, rehearsal space or art materials.
- People wishing to undertake apprenticeships, for tools, travel or specialist clothing to enable them to eventually contribute to the infrastructure of Wales.
- People entering further or higher education that may need financial help.
- Support for an individual who wants to regenerate a sense of community through a virtual or actual network.
- An enterprising individual who wishes to set up their own business but needs assistance with start-up costs.
The awards are funded by the Welsh Coalfields Bonds, which are issued by Citylife Ltd. The bonds (Social Investment Bonds) are purchased by charitable investors (organisations, businesses and individuals) and are re-invested with not-for-profit developers (such as housing associations) to build or renovate properties for community benefit. The interest paid by the development organisation is used by Citylife to fund the awards, supporting local people through confronting employment, combating exclusion, providing skills training and enabling access to education.
