Winning film ideas!
Two film newcomers have each won cash prizes of £2,500 after winning the Film Agency for Wales' Pitch to Win! open session. Aled Roberts from Llanelli and Anthony James from Cardiff succeeded in winning the audience and judges' vote after pitching the best ideas at the session, which was designed as a platform for potential emerging film talent in Wales.
Both participated at the event as part of the Cardiff Film Festival's 'Inside the Industry' events which invited Welsh born and/or resident writers to pitch their best original film idea to the audience; fellow pitchers; and a panel of industry representatives.
Aled, who currently works at a car radiator factory in Llanelli, was successful with his idea of Graceland, a film based on the lives of eight characters during three weeks surrounding the closure of a factory, whilst Anthony James, who works at the Cardiff School of Engineering, won with his film Death, Inc – a philosophical sci-fi thriller about the end of the world.
Aled said, "I'm really pleased I won – I just did my best and thankfully the judges liked my idea. The cash prize is a significant financial investment that will be of great support in developing my skills as a film maker in Wales."
Anthony said, "I just can't believe it, I'm overwhelmed but I'm really happy that they liked my idea so much, I usually write comedies so this one's a bit different. It's definitely a good sign of things to come."
Britt Harrison, Head of Talent for the Film Agency for Wales, said, "Inviting the whole audience to vote for the winning pitches really contributed to the excitement of our Pitch to Win! event. Both Anthony and Aled were clear winners, with their compelling projects. The occasion also illuminated the breadth of stories that Welsh writers want to explore."
