Stage meets screen as National Theatre Live comes to Wales
This spring, Welsh audiences will have the chance to experience critically-acclaimed theatre shows in their local cinema, as National Theatre Live broadcasts worldwide, including to eleven independent Welsh cinemas and arts centres.
Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Taliesin Arts Centre, Theatr Mwldan, the Torch Theatre and Wyeside Arts Centre are all part of the Wales Specialist Film Exhibition Group and will be screening the live broadcasts of new productions by some of the UK’s most celebrated playwrights. Theatre Clwyd and Chapter Arts Centre will also be launching their NT Live programmes in March 2013.
The History Boys writer Alan Bennett will see his new play, People, premiere on stage on the 21st March, screening simultaneously in cinemas across the network. Starring Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour, the show has been described by The Times as ‘wonderfully funny... a grand evening.’ Further information can be found here.
James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed new play This House will follow in May. The 70s-set political satire has earned five-star reviews from both the Daily Express and Daily Telegraph. Click here for more information.
The Film Agency for Wales’s Chief Executive, Pauline Burt, commented “Film is a terrifically popular medium and with today’s digital technology it is bringing whole new audiences to a wide variety of art-forms. Those same digital projectors are diversifying income streams for cinemas and cultural centres, helping to build more robust businesses and ensure broad cultural provision for audiences”.
