17 th May 2012Spend the weekend with top filmmakers at Hay-on-Wye
The world famous Hay Festival of literature and the arts kicks off on the last day of May, but just before Hay-on-Wye launches into festival fever, from May 25th, for three days, Oscar winners and nominees will be amongst the many film-makers descending on Hay-on-Wye for a weekend of master-classes, screenings and Q&A sessions at ‘Hay on Film’, the inaugural event of the Hay Film School.
Hay on film, which is supported by the Film Agency for Wales, is the brainchild of Cinematographer, Alan Trow British Society of Cinematographers and digital and post-production expert, Miguel Ferros MBKS, who are bringing together esteemed cinematographers, directors, designers and technicians from all over the UK for a celebration of the art and craft of film-making, at Richard Booth’s Bookshop Cinema, the world famous book emporium.
Richard Booth’s Bookshop is the largest bookshop in Hay-on-Wye, the Town of Books, and the cultural hub of the town. Founded in 1962 by Richard Booth, who made Hay world-famous as the capital of the second-hand book trade, an elegant façade with its glazed animalier tiles leads to a vast three-floor emporium with hundreds of thousands of second hand, antiquarian and new books.
However, it isn’t only literature for which this emporium of the arts is so well known and highly regarded. In recent years, new owner, Elizabeth Haycox, has embarked on a redevelopment of the famous bookshop, which has incorporated the introduction of a brand new, sate of the art cinema.
Weekend luminaries at Hay on Film include Director and Screen Writer Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I, The Killing Fields, The Rum Diary); Cinematographer Doug Milsome ASC BSC (Full Metal Jacket; The Shining); Nigel Ashcroft, Producer (The Tree of Life) and Revel Guest, Executive Producer, (War Horse).
There will also be workshops and demonstrations including – Bloody Marvellous! Make-up designer Claire Williams sharing the secrets of creating cinema blood and gore, and special effects expert, Tom Harris, will create explosions, action effects and general mayhem!
In the spirit of the wonderful CamerImage Festival in Poland, forthcoming events from Hay Film School will bring together students and established film makers in a celebration of their art.
Speaking about the event, Emma Flatley, Head of Exhibition and Education at the Film Agency for Wales, commented: “This is a hugely exciting and ambitious event, with an incredible line up of truly inspiring film makers from all aspects of the cinematic world. I’m sure it will be a massive hit for film fanatics across Wales and beyond”.
